Google Just Downgraded Free Gemini to Its Weakest AI Model
Starting today, the free version of Google's Gemini app gets noticeably dumber. Google has restricted users without a paid AI subscription to a single model — Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, the smallest and fastest in its lineup — stripping away access to the stronger Flash and Pro models they could previously switch between. And the downgrade doesn't stop at free users: even subscribers paying $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus are losing Pro. The change, detailed in an updated Google support document titled "Changes to Gemini model access and limits" and first reported by 9to5Google on October 3, takes effect for free users today, October 9.
