VSMC Opens $7.8B Singapore Fab, Already Eyes a Second

On Monday morning in Tampines, Singapore, VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — VSMC — celebrated the grand opening of its first 300mm chip fab, the culmination of a US$7.8 billion bet placed by Vanguard International Semiconductor and NXP Semiconductors two years ago. And before the opening ceremony's coffee had gone cold, the man who led the project was already talking about building another one. "We should've built two plants together here," VSMC and Vanguard chairman Leuh Fang told The Edge Singapore, describing capacity at the brand-new fab as already sold out. Twenty-two months after groundbreaking — with the first fab only just entering risk production — the company is accelerating its evaluation of a second plant on the adjacent site, one that could run on more advanced process technology than the first.
