Britain's £300M AI Shield Against Bioweapons Is Not Cash
By Daniel Rao | October 25, 2026 Britain has just announced the world's first laboratory dedicated to a threat most governments still talk about in the abstract: what happens when artificial intelligence meets biology. The catch, buried one paragraph below the headline number, is that most of the money isn't money at all. On 24 October, the Cabinet Office announced the AI Biosecurity Lab, or AIBL, backed by what it describes as up to £300 million of government funding and company commitments. Read the announcement line by line — we did — and the split tells a sharper story than the headline. The government is putting in £100 million in cash. The other £200 million arrives as computer time and model access from two American AI companies, OpenAI and Anthropic. Credits, not cheques. And credits only count if somebody uses them.
